The end of 2016 is near which means it’s time for some self-reflection. 2016 was full of ups and downs. The first half of the year was amazing, while the second half not so much. But with that, I learned a lot about myself. This is a lengthy post and it’s not related to fashion. But it will give you an insight into who I have become. Here are 16 things I learned in 2016:
NEVER GIVE UP
This is a characteristic I love about myself. No matter what I never give up. When I kill a plant, which is often, it will be months before I discard it. And yes I keep watering it in hopes that it will come alive again.
This year my computer crashed while doing an update for Windows 10. I had to set my computer back to factory mode which was Windows 7. I also lost everything that was saved on my computer. I spent countless hours trying to get back to Windows 10. And I’m still trying!
But more importantly I never give up on someone I love. I put them above myself no matter what. And that is something I am proud to say.
NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU WANT SOMETHING YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT
Just like the song says “you can’t always get what you want“. I’ve held on to something for a very long time, never giving up on it. But no matter how hard I worked at it, it just wasn’t working. I tell myself that if it was meant to be it will happen. It can be hard to accept, but there is nothing I can do to change that.
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
I never thought I could actually turn my dreams of being an entrepreneur into reality. But I am! This year I was fortunate to participate in an entrepreneurship program through Community Futures. I gained a world of knowledge and now I’m putting it into practice. If everything goes as planned BeEco Fashion will be a well recognized brand in the sustainable fashion world!
It’s important to take control of your life. If you don’t, life will just pass you by. Anything is possible you just have to put in the effort. It’s not going to happen by sitting on your ass. Get out there and make it happen!
BE HONEST & STRAIGHT FORWARD
Life is too short to be dishonest and beat around the bush. To be dishonest means you don’t accept who you are. Your thoughts and actions are yours. They are what makes you you. Don’t lie in an attempt to spare someone’s feelings. Their reaction is their perception. You can’t control that. And if you want to know something just ask. Don’t try to get an answer out of someone by asking 20 questions when you could have just asked one.
THE WALKING DEAD IS MY SAVIOR
Anyone who knows me knows I love The Walking Dead. It’s not just another zombie show. It is so much more. I have learned so much about myself by watching this show. It has helped me get through some tough days.
ASSUMPTIONS ARE NO GOOD
One of the biggest lessons I learned is to not make assumptions! Nobody is a mind reader and no matter how good you think you are at predicting an outcome just don’t. Like I said in being straight forward, if you want to know something just ask.
WHEN I LOVE SOMETHING I GO ALL IN
This one took me a while to really discover. It is a positive trait but also a curse. No matter what it is, whether it is The Walking Dead, my business, or a person, if I love it, it consumes me. Most of the time it’s good, but there are times when it leaves me vulnerable to getting hurt.
A CLEAN HOUSE = A CLEAN MIND
I suffer from anxiety on a daily basis. One of the things I learned to cope with this is to keep the house clean. When it’s cluttered and messy my anxiety is worse than normal. So I try to always keep it tidy. Also, I will never forget what my Grandma once told me: “you never know when someone will show up at your door”. As someone who is very Type A personality the thought of this is mortifying. How embarrassing it would be if the house was a mess!
TRAVELING IS IMPORTANT
Not only do you get to see the world but you learn quite a bit about yourself too. Traveling with a companion is always great because you can share the experience. But it’s okay to travel alone. Sometimes it can lead to some great self-discoveries. I made it my goal to travel somewhere at least once a year. Next year it’s Antigua!
ALWAYS CLOSE THE DOOR BEHIND YOU
I play a lot of video games and most of these are in the post-apocalyptic setting. One of the things I learned is to always close the door behind you. Nothing is worse than something jumping out behind you because you didn’t close the damn door!
IT’S OKAY TO BE ALONE
This is something I struggled with for quite a while but now I have learned to love. Being alone forces you to be with yourself. There are no distractions, forcing you to truly learn who you are. I think it’s important for everyone to spend time by themselves, whether that is just for a day or moving out on their own. You can learn a tremendous amount about yourself through this experience.
It’s always a good idea to be different. But what I am talking about specifically is in regards to holidays. It’s okay to not celebrate holidays. You don’t have to just because everyone else is. In fact, I am writing this on Christmas morning. To me, things are more meaningful when they are random. When someone surprises you with a gift for no reason you will always remember that. You don’t have to do something just because everyone else is.
NETFLIX IS EVIL
FAMILY COMES IN MANY FORMS
Everyone comes from somewhere. But just because you are blood related doesn’t mean they are automatically your family. When a women has a child she does not automatically become a mother. That is a title you earn. Many people get caught up in the assumption that just because you are blood related you are sworn to always be there. Just like any relationship, trust and love is gained. Don’t take it for granted. And don’t be blind to the fact that family can be outside of blood relation. Sometimes, loyalty is stronger than blood.
BACK UP EVERYTHING
Expanding on my computer crashing, it’s a good idea to always backup your data! Not only did my computer crash but my phone crashed too. There was a lot of data I lost between the two devices. Fortunately I learned to backup everything. You will kick yourself if the time comes when you lose everything.
LIFE WILL NEVER BE EASY
But that’s what makes it interesting. Life is always going to have its ups and downs. There will always good and bad. I’ve learned to accept it. You can’t fight it, you can’t control it, so just accept it. But make the most of it. And if you are in dark times right now just remember the storm can’t last forever.
