Swedish Stockings is a Swedish-based eco-friendly company that specializes in sustainable hosiery. I practically live in stockings as I’m always wearing dresses for work which makes finding an eco-friendly version very important. My initial search proved to be difficult – it’s hard to find a suitable company that offers a quality product at a reasonable price! Finally when I discovered Swedish Stockings I was really excited to give them a try. It’s been more than a couple of months since my purchase and the stockings still look brand new.
Because I haven’t featured Swedish Stockings before I’m going to give a brief overview of the company.
Swedish Stockings set out to become the first company to offer sustainable stocking options. Pantyhose is a petroleum product, which is one of our largest consumables. Petroleum consists of non-renewable fossil fuels that uses large amounts of energy and water during production.
The company uses yarn that is 90 – 98% recycled waste which is less harmful to the environment than traditional nylon products. This isn’t the only thing that makes the company a leader in sustainability. Their production process utilizes large amounts of solar power, reducing their energy consumption by 87.6%. In addition, the company purifies and treats all waste water from the dying process before disposing of it.
Another great attribute of this company is the recycling program their offer – dubbed the Recycling Club. In exchange for 3 or more old pairs of stockings (made by any brand), customers are provided with a 30% discount code for their next purchase. This is a great way to encourage customers to recycle!
Recycling old stockings proves to be difficult in that it requires the separation of the polyamide (the nylon) from the elastane (the stretch). The technology isn’t here just yet, but that doesn’t stop the company from coming up with solutions. In the short-term, Swedish Stockings grinds old pantyhose down into fiber glass tanks for oil traps for use in the commercial industry.
SHIPPING & PACKAGING
The package took about a month to arrive. Initially, this felt way too long. However, given that it is free shipping and it comes from Sweden I can’t really complain much. I was just too excited to get my package, which isn’t a bad thing!
Swedish Stockings offers free shipping on all international orders with the purchase of two or more pairs of stockings. Single purchases have a flat shipping rate of 25 SEK ($3.70 CDN). The email communication was great; the company consistently provided updates on my order right up until shipment.
The contents were packaged well and each pair of stockings came in its own box made from recycled materials. Also included in the package was a return postcard with details about their Recycling Club.
The Lia stocking is made with recycled premium yarn with a fiber thickness of 100 denier. The thickness of these stockings offer full coverage which is perfect for the winter season. The wide, high waistband makes them super comfortable for long days and they offer a matte finish.
The Olivia is also made with recycled premium yarn but at 60 denier. These stockings are suitable for many temperatures and seasons. The stockings offer a medium coverage and again are a matte finish with a wide high waistband.
The material consists of 92% polyamide and 8% elastane.
Both of my items proved to be exactly what I was looking for. Not only does Swedish Stockings offer full length stockings, but they also offer flat socks (Ester Steps 2 Pack) and knee high socks (Ingrid Knee High). You can also get various patterns and colours. I am so happy to have found this company, especially when it delivers everything that it claims to be.
Let me know if you try Swedish Stockings and what your experience is like.
